Half a century after 12 North American hoteliers established the Preferred Hotels Association as a referral organization, the Preferred brand is celebrating its 50-year anniversary of curating independent hotels. Over the past five decades, the company has evolved to become Preferred Hotels & Resorts, the world’s largest independent hotel brand with more than 650 member hotels, resorts and residences across 85 countries.

To commemorate this milestone, Preferred Hotels & Resorts launched a year-long Golden Anniversary campaign that invites travelers to explore its portfolio of independent hotels through a series of consumer-driven initiatives. Among the celebratory activities are a video series; a new social media campaign, #PreferredCelebrates50; a Golden Anniversary package; a bonus points booking incentive; and a dedicated Golden Anniversary microsite that will serve as the hub of all related activity throughout the year.

500 acres of rural land in the sleepy town of Goshen is being transformed into Legoland New York, a destination resort with a theme park and a hotel. Set to open in 2020, construction at the site includes actual bricks along with the toy brand’s signature plastic bricks.

Located about two hours north of New York City, the $350-million project represents the first major theme park to be built in the northeast USA in a long time (Six Flags America in Maryland opened in 1982 as Wild World, while both Darien Lake in New York and Sesame Place in Pennsylvania opened in 1981). It will take its cue from the country’s two existing Legoland parks in southern California and central Florida. There are other locations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Geared to families with young children, it will feature lands, rides, and shows based on Lego characters and the snap-together blocks’ toy lines, such as the Friends from Heartlake City.

Virgin Atlantic unveiled the first of four new Airbus A330-200 planes Monday, dubbed the Daydream Believer.

The new aircraft arrived at Gatwick Airport for finishing touches before it enters service in March. Virgin officials also announced that two other planes, called Scarlett O’Hara and Honky Tonk Woman, are expected to join the fleet over the next few weeks.

The Upper Class cabin introduces three new seat styles for Virgin Atlantic customers to choose from – the Love Suite, the Freedom Solo Suite, and the Corner Solo Suite – all with direct aisle access.
